Kabaddi fever hits Oldham
http://www.theasiannews.co.uk/sport/s/230/230899_kabaddi_fever_hits_oldham.html
Kabaddi is a game for two teams of seven players who each ‘raid’ their opponents side of the playing field while constantly chanting ‘kabaddi kabaddi’.
The game has been taken up by local youngsters after a summer scheme at Grange School looking into games of Asian origin in 2005. The success of lunchtime and after-school clubs proved the game had a future at the school and within the surrounding community.
Moinul Islam, group co-ordinator, said: “I believe that Grange Kabaddi Group has a lot to offer to the community and schools and also believe that we are the only group in the North West to offer kabaddi at such a high level.”
An Awards for All grant and support from the school has paid for equipment and accredited coaching on the international rules. The group has five qualified coaches, including one woman, and has started going into schools in the area to try to increase the game’s popularity.
